The rule of nines is a method medical providers use to assign a percentage to determine how much body surface area is damaged.
- The anterior and posterior of the head and neck are 4.5% each, which equals 9% of the body's surface area.
- The anterior and posterior of each arm and hand are 9% each, which equals 18% of the body's surface area.
- The anterior and posterior of the torso are 18% each, which equals 36% of the body's surface area.
- The anterior and posterior of each leg and foot are 18% each, which equals 36% of the body's surface area.
- The genital area equals 1% of the body's surface area.
